About this Blog

Welcome to the Sustainery - a place for reading, writing and thinking about sustainable practices. We are passionate about sustainability which is why we decided to contribute constructively to the idea and started this blog. With our posts, we would like to share our vision for a future world with you and tell you about our success stories as well as our struggles. Also, we would like to shed some light on all the great initiatives around the globe, pushing for sustainable development.

Talking about Sustainable Development

"Sustainability" has become a big buzz word in many discussions, books and advertisements. So, we want to make it clear what sustainability and sustainable development mean to us. Sustainable development is about two things: working towards justice for those living on our planet now and those who will live on it in the future as well as bringing humans (back) into a dynamic balance, interacting with nature on a global and a local scale. Like that, sustainability is not an empty phrase to us but a vision that needs to be supported by actions here and now to become reality.

Sharing our Sustainability Projects

We would like to use the Sustainery  as a platform to present our own experiences with practicing sustainability. In doing so, we don't want to draw a picture of us as flawless sustainability heroes. In fact, we want to show that sustainability is not about acting perfectly in every aspect, but about trying out what's possible for ourselves and acknowledging that every action is a valuable one. We'd love to spark some inspiration by sharing our journeys with all their ups and downs and help you find your own way of bringing sustainability into your everyday life.

Highlighting Sustainable Initiatives

Our individual and collective actions bear loads of potential for positive change. It's important to us to show ideas, projects and initiatives that are making this world a kinder place already today and will continue doing so in the future.

Who we are

Hi, we're

Julian                            &                            Hanna

two Sustainable Development students from Germany.

About Julian

I was challenged by my brother to try being vegetarian for just one week at the age of 13. I remember this as my first concious decisions towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Many have followed since.
Currently I am living in Taiwan writing up my thesis that will hopefully let me graduate as a Master of Sustainable Development by autumn this year. My connection to Taiwan dates back to my days as a student of political science and Chinese language. While the reoccuring wish to travel to Taiwan contradicts my identity as a Sustainer it provides me with an opportunity to share sustainable practices that I encounter on the far eastern islands with you.

About Hanna

Hello everyone,
my name is Hanna and right now I'm trying to finish my master's degree. Since March 2017, I'm living in the northeastern part of Germany, in a middle-sized city called Leipzig (which some also call Hypezig due to the fact that it's becoming rather popular among those searching for authentic subcultures and alternative lifestyles...).
My journey towards a mindset concerned with sustainability started with my volunteer year in Peru after high school. When I returned, I joined an association started by former volunteers of my program called Color Esperanza. Among other stuff, Color Esperanza is organizing a volunteer year for young Peruvians in Germany. Through getting involved in this project, I got really fond of the idea of contributing to change.
Right now, I'm trying to change my own habits for the better, for example, by avoiding waste. At the same time, I try not to exaggerate with my lifestyle changes, so I don't get too upset when my boyfriend  comes home with yet another plastic-wrapped piece of cheese.
